Effects of Relational Goods on Happiness of Elderly People in Korea
Ryu Jae-Rin

Abstract
This study analyzes the relationship between happiness and relational goods using KLTS (Korean Living Time Survey) in 2014 to figure out effects of relational goods on happiness of elderly people in Korea. The results are as follow. First, we found that relational goods which are represented by the time spent in relationships are positively related with the elderly`s happiness. And socially-related activities have a bigger impact on happiness than family-related activities. Second, life satisfaction is significantly related with both income level and comparison with other`s income, but experience of happiness is related with only income level. Third, face-to-face interactions have positive impact on both life satisfaction and experience of happiness, but interactions using media does not significantly affect the experience of happiness. Fourth, participation in the culture and leisure activity positively affects both the life satisfaction and the experience of happiness, while watching TV has a negative effect. We believe that our findings suggest some policy implications. First, it is necessary to strengthen the social network that can replace the gradually decreasing family relationship, considering that the influence of the social relationship type on the happiness is great. Second, institutional improvement is needed to ensure adequate retirement income. Also policies to reduce the inequality of the economy while increasing the quality of the elderly`s time use should be considered. Third, it is necessary to take policies that support leisure activities which can replace watching TV and increase meeting time.
